Bullets Over Broadway

Last night I saw Bullets Over Broadway by Woody Allen-

It was a very good but lacked quite a bit of fortitude..

Set in 1920's New York City, "Bullets over Broadway" (1994) tells the story of a young playwright David Shayne who tries to produce his first play. He "stands on the brink of greatness. The world will open to him like an oyster. No... not like an oyster. The world will open to him like a magnificent vagina" but he needs to find money for production first.

The Plot:

The money comes from the gangster Nick Valenti on one condition - Nick's stunningly untalented bimbo girlfriend Olive ("She ruins everything she's in. She ruins things she's not even in") has to play a psychiatrist. Olive is accompanied to each rehearsal by hit-man/bodyguard Cheech who knows how the real people talk and turned to be a greater writer than David. David's leading man, Warner Purcell eats compulsively every time he gets nervous (and there are plenty of reasons for him to get nervous). David's relationship with the girlfriend Ellen suffers when he begins an affair with the talented leading lady Helen Sinclair ("I'm still a star. I never play frumps or virgins.") who is "in the last couple of years... better known as an adulteress and a drunk."

The Verdict

"Bullets over Broadway" is one of my favorite comedies by one of the favorite directors/writers, Woody Allen. It has everything I look for in a comedy - brilliance, wit, clever writing, hilarious and sinister twist in the plot, amazing performances, authentic feel of the era and great musical score. "Bullets over Broadway" is pure delight from the beginning to the end. The best I could describe the film - to paraphrase the famous line from John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address: "Ask not what Art can do for you — ask what you can do for Art".

Zelig

I recently saw the movie, Zelig. It was interesting and really opened my eyes to Woody Allen as a creative film maker. It made me intrigued. Woody really knows how to make a good film- I would give this film a big FAN rating. If you didnt know this film was a "mockumentary", you would believe it is real! Just nuts!

I am taking a Woody Allen film class, its tough to just sit and watch movies all day long in class.. I struggle with this concept in general. ALSO I dont know where my graphic is so I will no longer be putting up graphics- that and I am lazy- Is anyone actually reading this garbage anyway? If you are, why are you? Dont you know that the information you are reading is pointless crap- Nobody cares what I have to say about movies- Anyway, if you are reading, you must be pretty cool, leave me a comment! I am "DYING" to know what you thought of this movie, and or my comments not related to the film.

There WILL Be Blood-FAN

I went and saw There Will Be Blood and loved it. The genre is of a new kind of western. Going in I heard people say it was way too long and the plot line didn't move.

WRONG- Daniel Day-Lewis portrayal of Daniel Plainview was stellar and the chemistry between him and his young son H.W Plainview (played by Dillon Freasier) is truly genuine. The film is somewhat of a biblical type tale being told through the eyes of a "sinner". It was amazing to watch Daniel Day-Lewis transform from a man with nothing in the beginning of the movie, then little by little builds steam through wealth and his job as a man who establishes oil rigs. Day-Lewis gains so much wealth and power by the end of the film, he loses his mind and turns mad. The film is also complimented by the Preacher (Paul Dano) and a cast of delightful characters. This movie is a great example of a "new western" and has all the elements that can make you laugh, cry and feel a bevy of emotions. The violence is subtle happening within a blink of an eye in most cases. After all, there will be blood...

For this movie I give 4 STARS of 5 and a FAN rating..

As a father (Ryan Reynolds) goes through a difficult divorce, his young daughter, Maya, (Abigail Breslin) begins questioning him on his entire romantic history. He then tells her the tale of the three great loves of his life and has her guess what woman eventually became her mother. Is it the sweet-as-pie girl-next-door Emily (Elizabeth Banks)? His best friend (Isla Fisher)? Or the flaky journalist (Rachel Weisz)?

Abigail Breslin's performance in Definitely, Maybe is pure genius. Throughout the film, Breslin stays present and in every moment delivers a pure performance. She is cute, humorous, tender, and delivers many emotions with ease. She compliments Ryan Reynolds so well, you cant even tell that he is playing the same character he plays in every film he has done.

Elizabeth Banks gives a stellar performance as the girl-next-door Emily. Reynolds first love from college. She gives that hometown feel to her character and plays a very likeable mother for Breslin- or is she?

Isla Fisher is my favorite adult actress in this film- You remember her as the red head in Wedding Crashers and in this movie she plays a simple sophisticated young lady. Her performance wants you to have her as Breslin's mom- AND she could be!

Rachel Weisz did an excellent job of making me hate her. Her character is a typical slut. She sleeps with her professors and others in her professional life to get ahead. She is someone I did not want to be Breslin's mom- but she was- OR WAS SHE?

The director of Love Actually Adam Brooks really directed an excellent movie. I recommend this to anyone except children after all it is PG-13.

FOR THIS MOVIE I give 4 and 1/2 stars out of 5 and a big FAN rating

Saturday Night at the Movies

"Saturday Night at the movies? Who cares what picture you see? When your hugging with your baby in the first row of the balcony..."

Remember when the movies were the most popular thing to do on the weekends? For me it STILL is. There is nothing more theatrical than attending a showing of a film in the dark romanticism of the movie theater. Theres nothing like the sights and smells of the theater with popcorn popping and the abundance of candy. Thats why I see movies, I dont care how awful they are. Some people go purely to watch good films and there is a lot of debate over what constitutes "good". With my acting background and consumer eye for what looks good- I can give you the lowdown on what movies to see and what to avoid-

This blog will also go into reviews on movies now out on DVD and Blue Ray. When you look down your list of "On Demand" and cant decide what to watch, just check out this blog for a little insight.

Foreign Films? I am limited in this area but I will see as many as I can at the Rag Tag (Columbia's Independent Movie House) And get you what I can-
